If you could do anything professionally, what would you do?
Let’s assume you won the lottery but still want to keep busy. What would make you wake up in the morning?
It’s a question a friend asked me recently after he attended a workshop that started with an exercise to highlight people’s’ passions. For my friend, it as an eye-opener because it put a long-simmering idea into the spotlight.
When he asked what I would do, I quickly answered I would provide guidance to entrepreneurs. (Note: Learning how to drive a Zamboni was a close second!). It’s pretty much what I do now with entrepreneurs, although most of it involves marketing.
While entrepreneurship is my passion, it wasn’t until 2008 that I really became an entrepreneur. Before that, I was a newspaper journalist, which I enjoyed. I also co-founded a startup and worked for two startups.
But it wasn’t until I started my own business that I realized that entrepreneurship felt right and natural. I like people and asking questions, something that served me well as a journalist. The same characteristics are keys to being a good entrepreneur. You listen to what customers want, ask them about their interests, needs, and problems, and develop a product that delivers value. Of course, it’s not always that simple but there are a few fundamentals that serve entrepreneurs well.

For people exploring entrepreneurship, one of the keys to success is a strong belief in what you’re doing and selling. It is easier to attract customers when you’re offering something that matters to you. Entrepreneurs run into problems when what they’re selling doesn’t excite or interest them because there’s no belief in the product.
While my friend is entering a competitive marketplace, I’m confident he will do well because he’s passionate about the service and how it will help people learn and be successful. When talking to him, you can tell it’s something he wants to do because he truly believes it will deliver value.
